Walter Washington De Lacy was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on February 22, 1819, the son of William and Eliza de Lacy. At the age of fifteen he entered Mount St. Mary's Catholic College in Emmetsburg, Maryland, and graduated in 1838. Nathanial Pitt Langford was born in Westmoreland, New York, in 1832; he came to St. Paul in 1854. He was cashier in the banking house of Marshall and Company in 1855, and in 1858 he became cashier of the Bank of the State of Minnesota. Samuel Thomas Hauser (1833-1914), born in Kentucky, moved to Missouri in 1853 and became an engineer. He was a member of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1863 and the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition to the Upper Missouri.
